Exempt teachers who did MPhil before July 2009 from NET/SLET
Teachers under the banner of Bombay University and College Teachers’ Union (Buctu) have written to the vice-chancellor of Mumbai University, asking for exemption from National Eligibility Test (NET) or State Level Eligibility Test (State Level Eligibility Test) for those teachers who had acquired MPhil prior to July 11, 2009, followinga recent court order.
The second amendment of the University Grants Commission (UGC) came into force in 2006. It said that NET/SLET is compulsory, but all those who have MPhil or PhD qualifications are eligible to teach and can be exempted from it.
The third amendment came into effect on July 11, 2009. It said only those who had PhD can be granted exemptions from NET/SLET.
Meanwhile, some teachers, who had obtained MPhil before July 11, 2009, had moved the Aurangabad bench of the Bombay high court so that their appointments are approved. The court recently passed an order which said that all candidates holding MPhil degree on or before July 10, 2009, shall remain exempted from the requirement of NET for the purpose of appointment as lecturer or assistant professors.
These teachers had come into service after July 11, 2009, but since the advertisement for their appointment was issued before the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) third amendment came, the court said their appointment must be regularised.
Following the order, Buctu’s letter now wants the university to regularise the appointment of several teachers belonging to Mumbai University.
“Many Mumbai University teachers who got their MPhil before the third amendment came, are still working on a contractual basis. We have, therefore, asked the university to grant them approvals so that they can enjoy the benefits of a regular service,” said the spokesperson.
